Career Description
The Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center highlights some of the area's most famous of countless travelers and residents over hundreds of years along this special stretch of the Missouri River. Each of our galleries tells the story of different group. Nearby, visitors can step back in time at the reconstructed Fort Mandan, a fully furnished, full-sized replica of the fort in which the Lewis & Clark Expedition overwintered in 1804-1805. Their time here was characterized by the hospitality of the Mandan and Hidatsa peoples. In fact, this is where they met and built friendships with such important figures as Sacagawea, Toussaint Charbonneau, and Sheheke-Shote.Job Duration: Flexible! Approximately February 1 to September 30This position may also qualify for ACA benefits. This position can be adapted to an internship for an accredited college/university.



The historical interpreter will execute their responsibilities with a positive attitude, neat appearance, and enthusiasm. The successful applicant will:Actively listen to visitors, answer their questions, welcome and orient them, lead guided tours of Fort Mandan, lead hands-on activities, and assist with special eventsInterpret site history enjoyably and accurately, making good use of research, training, hands on history items, props, and programmingAssess and provide for visitors' special needs, such as appropriate services for the elderly, handicapped, and foreign visitorsAssist with store operations that includes keeping merchandise neatly displayed and dusted, keeping track of inventory, and operating and reconciling cash register, while following policies and proceduresClean and tidy facilities including work areas, public areas, and bathrooms. Perform other light maintenance tasks which might include watering and weeding outdoor plantings, dusting, emptying trash receptaclesFamiliarize visitors with the State Historical Society mission and other state historic sites

Minimum Qualifications

Must be at least 18 years oldAbility to communicate with groups and individuals of diverse ages, interests, and perspectives, using appropriate language and hands-on skillsAbility to learn site historyAbility to work flexible work hours including weekends, holidays, and some eveningsAbility to accurately complete required forms such as timesheets, till counts, etc.Self-motivatedProfessional customer service experience preferredAll applicants are responsible for their own housing.
